For the second year in a row, Holywood’s Rory McIlroy has finished runner-up in the prestigious Abu Dhabi Championship. A careless two shot penalty on Friday cost Rory big time as he lost the tournament by a single shot to England’s Robert Rock. Fellow Northern Irishman, Graeme McDowell tied third place with Tiger Woods and Thomas Bjorn.

A take-away on the Movilla Road was robbed last night by a man wielding an axe. The man,, described as in his 20s and of heavy build, entered the premises at around 11:15pm and threatened a member of staff before making off with a sum of money.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland in conjunction with ntl: Telewest Business and Fold Telecare have launched a scheme called ‘Quick Check’ to tackle the issue of bogus callers. The 24-hour telephone allows householders to make a freephone call to verify the individual identity of anyone calling at their door. This is the first service of its kind within Northern Ireland.

The guitar playing of 8 year old English schoolgirl, Zoe Thomson, has taken YouTube by storm. Zoe, from Thatcham in Berkshire, has wowed millions as she expertly played a piece by Finnish band Stratovarius’s Stratosphere on her electric guitar. So kids, put away those game consoles and get practicing, who knows…

A ball boy stunned spectators at the Australian Open tennis tournament. 14 year old,  Dylan Colaci, took centre stage during the semi-final match between Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer when he coolly produced an amazing reflex catch. The catch has already had more than 5 million hits on YouTube.

What do Champagne, Cornish Pasties, Gorgonzola, Shetland Wool and Melton Mowbray pork pies have in common? They all have European protected name status. The good old Comber spuds are among the latest to gain EU Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in that if they’re not produced in the Comber area, then they can’t be called ‘Comber Earlies’ or ‘New Season Comber Potatoes’.

Due to the area’s light sandy soil which is very well suited to potato growing, Comber crops can usually be harvested earlier than anywhere else in Northern Ireland.

A lorry carrying a huge load of mackerel, overturned on the Derryboy Road outside Crossgar yesterday. The lorry landed on its side spilling the entire contents of the trailer across a field, prompting a large ‘scale’ cleanup operation. It brings a whole new meaning to ‘Fish Farm’.
