As of April 2012 simply having your dog licenced will not be enough, all dog owners will have to show that their pooch has been microchipped. Previously this was a costly exercise however, Ards Borough Council in alliance with the Dogs Trust are offering FREE microchipping in a bid to further responsible dog ownership. This offer is only valid until 31st March 2012.

This involves a small chip being inserted just under the skin, which the Dog Warden or other animal welfare officer can scan using a hand held reader to retrieve the owner’s name and address, enabling lost dogs to be returned to their owners much sooner than before.

So kids, put away those game consoles and get practicing, who knows…

A ball boy stunned spectators at the Australian Open tennis tournament. 14 year old,  Dylan Colaci, took centre stage during the semi-final match between Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer when he coolly produced an amazing reflex catch. The catch has already had more than 5 million hits on YouTube.

What do Champagne, Cornish Pasties, Gorgonzola, Shetland Wool and Melton Mowbray pork pies have in common? They all have European protected name status. The good old Comber spuds are among the latest to gain EU Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in that if they’re not produced in the Comber area, then they can’t be called ‘Comber Earlies’ or ‘New Season Comber Potatoes’.

Due to the area’s light sandy soil which is very well suited to potato growing, Comber crops can usually be harvested earlier than anywhere else in Northern Ireland.
